An evening out

Whilst MF had a ‘nap’/ deep sleep, I decided to walk to Casa dos Bicos as we have tours for the next 2 days with limited opportunity for exploring Lisbon.

Casa dos Bicos:

My walk took me via a couple of viewpoints with lovely views out over the river in the lovely early evening light. I also passed the huge 12th century (Lisbon Cathedral) along the way.

When I got back to our apartment, MF was still ‘out like a light’ but managed to scramble himself together so I could take him to one of the miradouro I had found earlier - and we had a nice drink looking out at the lovely views.

We then headed off to dinner at the restaurant (O Prego) owned by Miguel who had helped us with our bags and finding our apartment the first night. He had told us there would be fado playing.

Fado is a unique Portuguese musical style traced back to the 1820s. Fado houses were concentrated in Lisbon's historic quarters from the 1930s onwards and is now typically associated with cafes and restaurants, particularly in the area where we are staying.

It is characterised by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fate and melancholy.

We had a great evening although I was fading fast - really nice food and a very authentic fado show with one guy playing fado guitar accompanied by another on classical guitar and a couple of singers.
