Good flight but let down at immigration control by an hour’s wait in queue to be processed … We took the very efficient Metro from the airport and at Martim Moniz station, dragged our suitcases up flights of stairs (!) - how do the disabled manage??!
As promised, the streets are steep with shiny cobbles - and (of course) our maps didn’t work. We managed with some generous assistance from locals including one young guy and his friend who downloaded a map to my phone; and a bar owner at the top of the hill who helped us find our apartment and even carried one of our suitcases up stairs(!) - he really was a saviour.
We got into the apartment building successfully but the code for the room didn’t appear to be working so I envisaged a night on the stairs! By now it was after 11 pm - fortunately The Guy answered the phone (phone sim didn't work so had to use Australian sim!!) and we were apparently clearing the keypad incorrectly!
It’s a lovely little apartment up a narrow laneway and we dashed straight out (once we had finally got in) and grabbed some breakfast groceries from one of the many mini-marts before they closed.
Also managed a glass of very nice red wine each from a bar further up the hill just before closing time at midnight.
Walked home circuitously checking out our local Alfama district and clambered into bed around 2 am. Have walked 10 kms.
MF is still sorting out IT issues …
